The Data Solutions Center (DSC) at GTE Mobilnet's Atlanta headquarters is a facility for the demonstration and promotion of wireless data products and services. It provides a conveniently accessible venue for demonstrating CDPD and Circuit-Switched Cellular data operation for wireless data users, vendors, application developers, and customers. The DSC is targeted toward business users of wireless data products in all market areas including Field Service, Fleet Management, Mobile Office, Telemetry, Public Safety, LAN Access, Point-of-Sale, and other applications.
A number of commercial vendors involved in the promotion of wireless data products have committed to participate with GTE Mobilnet in the DSC. Participation in the DSC takes many forms ranging from the donation of equipment and software which will be seen by DSC visitors, to use of the DSC as a controlled environment for concept testing or demonstration.
In addition to containing a live CDPD base station, the DSC offers an assortment of hardware platforms and operating system environments for the demonstration and development of a wide variety of wireless data services and products. These platforms and operating systems include:
Windows NT, Windows for Workgroups, Novell NetWare, Macintosh, UNIX, OS/2, Pentiums, i486, Apple Macintosh II, RS/6000.
A wide assortment of protocol stacks, middleware, and wireless data applications are also on hand. The DSC maintains a direct connection to the Internet for connectivity of DSC-internal facilities with external fixed and mobile platforms.
