5 Apps to Make Freelancing Easier

5 Apps to Make Freelancing Easier

Being a freelancer comes with its own unique set of perks.  Being your own boss, making your own schedule, and working within a field that you enjoy are some of the key aspects that attract people to this type of professional calling. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t equally unique challenges.

One of the biggest hurdles that freelancers face at various points in their careers is staying organized and managing the requirements of self-employment. You may be a great writer, designer, stylist or programmer, but you’ll also need to be able to address finance and accounting concerns, schedule meetings/appointments, take care of administrative tasks, and act as your own sales or marketing team.

Fortunately, freelancers in today’s world have access to apps that can help them streamline and manage even the most daunting aspects of self-employment. There are multiple apps and programs available out there, but here are a few of our favorites.  Each of these helpful tools are available at a basic level for free and provide even more services should you decide to upgrade to their premium, paid plans or memberships.

Evernote

Perfect for note taking, organizing and tracking research, keeping track of due dates, and managing to-do lists

With a simplistic and straightforward interface, Evernote makes it easy to keep project notes organized.  An added plus is its ability to save websites or clip information from websites, digitalize documents, and saved images so you can review or reference them later. Throw in the ability to tag and annotate all the aforementioned and it’s really a useful tool for freelancers and professionals from all industries.

One of the other reasons you’ll find Evernote on the top of freelance app lists is its ability to operate on and sync data between your smartphone, tablet, and computer.  That means you can take notes, save websites, and review your information in line at the coffee shop or at home in your office without missing a beat.

PocketSuite

Perfect for managing invoices and client payments like a pro.

PocketSuite is geared at managing two of the most important aspects of any freelance business: scheduling appointments and managing payments.

Even the basic membership unlocks unlimited appointment scheduling, invoicing, and client messaging.  Additionally, each membership level includes the ability to accept and process credit card payments (fees vary based on membership level).

Perhaps the most enticing aspect of this app is its ability to really cater to multiple business types. Personal fitness trainers, dog walkers, or stylists and makeup artists may really enjoy the ability to create packages or classes, while those in industries like cleaning and landscaping may find real-time staffing through SMS texts to be incredibly useful.

Go To Meeting

Perfect for engaging with clients anytime, anywhere.

Meetings are a fact of life in the professional world, and that includes freelancers. There are, admittedly, many ways to set up and hold meetings, but Go to Meetings is proving to be a favorite among professionals of all types.

Why?  Aside from the typical meeting features, this mobile friendly app also includes the ability to set up meetings on the fly with its one-time setup feature, record meetings for easy note taking and time recording, and not only share your screen but also utilize the in-app drawing functionality  to enrich calls and communication.

Long story short, this app makes interfacing with clients hassle free.

Focus Booster

Perfect for keeping you on task and assisting with time management.

Distractions are everywhere, but when you are your own boss, it sometimes seems easier to take a trip down the rabbit hole of time.  As the name would insinuate, Focus Booster is meant to help you stay focused and on track.

Conversely, while some of us may find it difficult to stay focused, others may find that they work too long without a break, depriving themselves of much needed mental refresh periods.  Focus Booster can also help ensure you manage your mind and take breaks when you need them.

Based on the Pomodoro Technique, which breaks work intervals into 25 minute spurts with short breaks in between, Focus Booster helps you “break the cycle of distraction and accomplish more.”  Aside from helping you efficiently use your time, this app also allows you to view how you spent your time, where you’ve made your revenue, and create reports and invoices based on this valuable information.

Drop Box

Perfect for storing, editing, and sharing files, documents, images, and more across multiple devices and with multiple people.

It seems that Dropbox usage is fairly common these days, but this list would be incomplete without a quick shout-out to this increasingly popular document storage solution.

Extremely user friendly, Dropbox is the perfect solution for storage across multiple devices.  Save something on your laptop and then open and edit it from your phone or tablet while you’re on the go.  As an added bonus, you can gain some peace of mind knowing that if your computer fails or you lose your tablet, your documents will still be safely stored in your Dropbox account.

The peace of mind and multi-device access may be enough, but freelancers who collaborate with others or want to share information with clients will also really enjoy the ability to invite and share documents with others.
