The Shell Performance Elite World Mastercard works differently from a straight cash-back card. You earn rewards everywhere, but you can only redeem them for Shell purchases.
The Shell Performance Elite World Mastercard rewards every purchase, but you'll earn the highest rate when you pay for fuel, EV charging or other items at Shell.
For example, a business owner filling up twice a week at 15 gallons a fill, at about $3.30 a gallon, spends roughly $5,100 on Shell fuel a year and earns about $204 back at 4%. Another $6,000 a year in dining and groceries at 3% adds $180, and $12,000 in all other spending at 2% adds $240, for roughly $624 a year with no annual fee.
That's a solid return, but you can't use those rewards however you want. They’re automatically redeemed as a statement credit against your qualifying Shell purchases at the end of each billing cycle. If your rewards balance is greater than your eligible Shell purchases for that cycle, the remaining rewards stay in your rewards balance and are automatically applied during a future eligible billing cycle.
Say you earn $65 in rewards one month but fill up at Shell only once for $50. At the close of the billing cycle, that $50 charge gets wiped out by your rewards. The remaining $15 carries over to the next billing cycle, waiting for the next time you buy at Shell.
It’s important to note that the Shell Performance Elite Rewards Mastercard is a personal card and not a small business card. This means you’ll not only be subject to a hard pull on your personal credit when you apply, but if you use this card for a combination of personal and business spending, it can create complications at tax time. Ideally, you’ll keep your business expenses separate from your personal ones. If you only use this card for business purchases, it’s worth it if you fuel up at Shell regularly and put your other business spending on the card too. You earn 4% at Shell, 3% on dining and groceries, and 2% everywhere else, with no annual fee.
This card makes the most sense if Shell is already part of your routine. Otherwise, you may earn rewards faster than you can actually use them.
If you plan to spend consistently at Shell, the rewards are competitive for a no-annual-fee card. If you don't, a general-purpose small business card that pays flexible cash back will serve your business better.
Imprint doesn't publish a minimum credit score for the Shell Performance Elite World Mastercard. You can check whether you prequalify with no impact to your credit score. Imprint only runs a hard credit pull if you accept an offer.
Applications are open at myshellcard.com. The process is fully online, with prequalification available that doesn’t affect your credit score. Once you accept an offer, you can access your virtual card in the Imprint app and add it to Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
If you had one of the old Citi Shell cards, you don't need to apply. Cardholders are being moved to the new card. You'll get a notice in the mail, a new Imprint account will be created for you, and you set it up at account.imprint.co/shell/welcome. Your new card will have a different number than your old one. There are two things to keep in mind during the transition. Your autopay does not carry over from Citi, so you'll need to re-establish it in Imprint. And, your old billing statements won't be available in the new account, so download any you need before your account transfers.
The Shell Performance Elite World Mastercard works anywhere Mastercard is accepted. Just remember that you can only redeem rewards toward Shell purchases.
You can manage your account online at account.imprint.co/shell or in the Imprint app, where you can schedule payments, enroll in AutoPay, add authorized users at no additional charge and track transactions.
For account questions, you can reach customer service at 1-888-427-0544 or through the Shell credit card help center at shellcreditcard.zendesk.com.
Pay your statement balance in full each month to avoid interest. A late payment may trigger a fee and can hurt your credit score.
The Shell card works best for those that regularly fill up at Shell. If you frequent multiple brands or want rewards you can redeem however you like, a general-purpose business card is the stronger pick. It’s also worth remembering that the Shell Performance card is a personal card, so it won’t help you separate your business and personal expenses cleanly nor will it help you build business credit.
Confirm the current terms on each issuer's page before you apply because welcome offers and APRs change often.
