Citi Business Credit Card Reviews

Let’s dive deeper into our review of two of the most versatile business credit cards available today.

CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard®

This card for small businesses is frequently praised for its generous travel rewards, and is ideal if you are a frequent American Airlines traveler.

The card offers an attractive sign-up bonus offer that can provide ample points for a round trip domestic flight: earn 65,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $4,000 in purchases within the first 4 months of account opening.

The intro offer for this card isn’t as competitive as some of those offered in the past, but it’s a good value for travel business cards and easily rivals other current travel card promos on the market today.

There’s no annual fee ($99 after the first year), which makes the popular CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® hard to beat for frequent travelers of the award-winning airline.

There is also a long list of travel-related perks that come with the card. One of the best values is the free checked bag with each domestic flight, a value of $30 or more. If you take just two round trip flights a year, this perk alone pays for the annual fee. Add in 25% off for inflight WiFi services, earlier boarding than standard ticket holders, and you have what might even be a pleasant flight experience.

To earn points, this card offers:

  • 2 AAdvantage® miles per $1 spent on eligible purchases with American Airlines®
  • 1 AAdvantage® mile per $1 spent on other purchases
  • 2 AAdvantage® miles per $1 spent on purchases at telecommunications merchants, cable and satellite providers, car rental merchants, and gas stations.

(Note that the checked bag and upgraded seating perks are valid for all members of your group when you book and fly together; team members traveling together and using your card all get to take advantage of this offer, easily giving extra value to an already competitive card.)

Some restrictions apply. Miles cannot be earned for cash advances, balance transfers, or certain other purchases, such as lottery tickets or gambling transactions.

The card issuer also offers an attractive benefit of a free American Airlines Companion Certificate that can be used for domestic main cabin travel when you spend $30,000 or more in purchases each cardmember year and is redeemable after your first year has completed. If you expect to fly a lot, it makes sense to try this card out with the first-year waived annual fee, get the bonus miles, spend an additional $20,000 and get the free companion ticket, and keep the card and perks for a very modest $99 annual fee. The savings opportunities for American Airlines loyal flyers are almost unlimited.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi

Another option worth considering, especially if business travel isn’t your thing, is the Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi.

Costco club members pay a $0 annual fee with their paid warehouse membership, and the competitive cash back on fuel makes this card a top pick for business owners who drive often. You can earn cash back for other purchases as well: 4% cash back on eligible gas and EV charging purchases for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter. 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases. 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com. 1% cash back on all other purchases.

There is no limit to rewards and your credit card doubles as your Costco membership card. Show it at checkout to get great deals on Costco merchandise, charge your purchase to your account, and build those rewards for an unlimited payout when your reward points certificate is issued in February.

This card has a lower rate than some other retail and warehouse club cards, so use it for your in-store purchases, online at the Costco website, and wherever you shop. You’ll be getting points for all your business purchases, and team members and employees who are issued cards can be added to your account for even faster reward earnings.

Your rewards card accrues points as you shop, on your own timeline. You’ll also be building your business and personal credit profile while you make those essential purchases your company needs.

In order to take advantage of the rewards, be sure to keep your club membership and your credit card account open and in good standing. There is no bonus offer or intro offer for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi; just high-value rewards on everything you buy.

Benefits of a Citibank Business Credit Card

First, let’s talk about the general benefits that a business credit card can offer over small business loans. Taking out a loan can give you a lump sum of money, which is great if you have a large, defined expense looming, like buying real estate or renovating an office.

But often, you just want to be empowered to pay for expenses for your business, big and small, without tying up all your cash. That’s why a business credit card is ideal.

And one with such generous opportunities to rack up rewards points for business expenses like Citibank business credit cards offer provides even more benefits to your company. You can reduce what you spend on business travel by redeeming airline points and taking advantage of those other perks like free checked bags or put money back in your checking account with cash back rewards.

How to Qualify for a Citibank Business Credit Card

To qualify for either Citi card, you will need to be 18 years of age or older and in the U.S. You must be an Authorized Officer and controlling party of the business you’re opening a card for

Citibank may run your personal or business credit reports through one or more credit bureaus (a soft inquiry) to verify your credit before approving your application.

Opening a Citibank Business Credit Card

If you’re already a Citibank customer, you’ll get a shorter application to fill out online, but if you’re not, no worries.

You will be asked questions about your business, including name, address, annual revenue, business structure, and tax ID number. You’ll also be asked questions about how many employees you have and how long you’ve been in business.

As the Authorized Officer, you will need to provide personal information, such as your home address and social security number. If you are an American Advantage member and are applying for the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® card, you’ll be asked for your member number.

Is a Citi Card for You?

There is no shortage of business corporate cards available in the marketplace right now, and there are usually two questions applicants should ask when deciding when one is best for their current financial situation.

Does This Card Fit My Current Spending Patterns?

For someone who travels a lot, an airline-branded Citi business card makes sense because it gives you above-average earnings on airline purchases and can give the loyal traveler fast travel rewards. It can also benefit the cardholder with free checked bags and discounts on in-flight buys. If you don’t fly often, a retail business card may be more your speed, giving you the maximum earnings on items bought in-store, with travel rewards as good as cash if you want to continue shopping in the future.

These are both examples of how both the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® and Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi fits existing spending patterns to maximize rewards and save big money over the life of the card.

What Bonus Offers or Promos Can I Take Advantage of?

With the Costco card mentioned above, there is no promo offer. What you get when you sign up is the standard rates, fees, and rewards that all cardholders get, and this likely won’t change during your membership. The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® does have an offer going on right now, and it’s a valuable way to earn miles fast – even when used to buy fuel, pay for a cell phone, or get groceries. With the potential to get bonus miles in the first year (in addition to your regular miles), it’s worth considering, regardless of where you shop.

You may only sign up for this offer once.

Can I Apply for Both the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® and the Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi?

You can apply for one or both of the cards you are interested in and feel that you qualify to be approved for. However, each application will result in an inquiry on your credit report, and too many inquiries within a short time period may lower your business credit scores too much.

Some applicants choose, instead, to stagger out their applications, every six months or so. The best way to know if you’ll be approved, however, is to get both your personal and business credit scores at the time you wish to apply and see if they are suitable for the card you are applying for.

Citi has the final say on who gets approved, and only they can determine if you would qualify for both cards. In some instances, especially for those who make frequent Costco purchases and are loyal to American Airlines, it may make sense to have both cards in your wallet.

Can I Earn Companion Tickets with my Credit Card?

For the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard®, there is an added bonus of an American Airlines Companion Certificate valid for domestic main cabin travel after you spend $30,000 or more in purchases. It Is limited to one per cardmember per year and is available after your card has been renewed for the year at the $99.

How Do I Pay My Business Citi credit Cards?

You can pay your card by calling the number on the back of your card or visiting the Citi official website. Costco does not take credit card payments in-store at this time.

How Will I Get My Credit Card Rewards?

Citi rewards are calculated and paid out according to each card’s terms.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi pays out rewards accumulated every February in the form of a rewards certificate, which must be redeemed in-store for merchandise. The balance remaining after purchase may be paid out in cash in certain instances, or a check may be requested for the full value of the reward certificate. Rewards will only be paid to card members in good standing who are also Costco members at the time of disbursement.

When Will My Bonus Reward Miles Be Paid Out?

CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® Miles are added to your monthly loyalty membership statement after each billing statement is created. They are available to use as soon as they are credited to your account. They never expire as long as your travel rewards account remains in good standing.
