Full Review
Most all of the airline-branded business cards on the market charge annual fees these days, but the waiver offered the first year for new Citibusiness cardholders gives you a no-risk chance to try this card out to see if it’s worth paying the ongoing $99 fee. In comparison to other cards, however, this fee is rather modest; other airline cards have fees ranging from $125 to $250 or more for similar perks.
The card’s generous sign-on offer is where it really shines. The possibility of earning substantial AAdvantage miles is an attractive one, especially for American Airlines frequent flyers, and it’s easy for most businesses to spend the required $4,000 in the first four months to snag these 65,000 promo miles. If you commit to putting a good chunk of business expenses on this card, you can see how these points can accumulate quickly for free and discounted future flights.
As far as earning rewards outside of the promo program, this card’s benefits are somewhat lackluster. A modest 2x rate on eligible American Airlines purchases, telecommunications/cable/satellite providers, car rentals, and fuel purchases is a bit less than what competing, non-airline business card issuers offer, and the 1 mile earned for everything else is underwhelming, as well.
However, the card makes up for savings opportunities with the free checked bag per flight for those who travel often. You can also get free checked bags for up to four companions traveling with you on the same reservation.
Here’s another perk: if you spend $30,000 or more in eligible purchases each year, you can earn a $99 domestic economy fare American Airlines Companion Certificate. For many businesses, hitting this spending threshold will be easy. And you can rack up more miles by having additional authorized users on your account.
Fees to be aware of include the cash advance rate of 25.24% and the cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the cash advance amount, whichever is greater.
How to Redeem your Rewards
Earning American Aadvantage miles is easy, as is redeeming them. You’ll receive an update to your miles balance through your linked AAdvantage loyalty account. Look for the total number of points earned on your credit card statement, then verify that this has been credited by logging into your AAdvantage online account.
It may take a few weeks for the loyalty account to sync up with your newly-earned points. You shouldn’t have to do anything extra to get your miles, however. It’s a fully-automated process, and your points are available to spend as soon as you see them in your AAdvantage dashboard. To ensure that you’re credited promptly for purchases made during the promo period, be sure to include your AAdvantage number in your credit card application.
To redeem your AAdvantage miles, log into your AAdvantage account and select the reward you want. Reward options include:
- One-way and round-trip flights, domestic and international
- Flight upgrades
- Main cabin seats
- Cars
- Hotels
- Vacations
- Five-star service
- Admirals Club membership
- Products
- Donations
For reward travel, you can redeem miles for both American Airlines and its partners like British Airways.
Is the
Right for You?Like most airline-branded cards, the Citibusiness card is best for those who are loyal to one airline and plan on traveling on more than a few flights per year. For everyone else, taking advantage of sign-up bonus earning opportunities is the most effective way to use this card. Citi gives you a full year to see if you like it before charging that annual fee. You can hardly go wrong with at least giving it a try.
Other Options
If you aren’t loyal to one airline for most of your travel or like to accumulate more rewards in categories other than travel, you may want to consider one of these other Citi branded business credit cards. Additionally, if you’re a small business owner who frequently shops at Costco, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi could be a better fit.
Before deciding on a business credit card, be sure to explore introductory offers from other credit card companies. The American Express® Business Gold Card, for example, lets you customize your rewards based on your business needs. Also, Chase and Capital One both offer several business credit cards with different rewards programs to consider.
